WHO CAN ATTEND
The 2012 MMSI AP Summer Institute is open to all MMSI Advanced Placement Training and Awards Program (APTAP) teachers who have attended fewer than two AP Summer Institutes since entering the APTAP, and will be teaching at least one AP course (math, science, English) in school year 2012-13, with the exception of AP Biology teachers. All AP Biology teachers are eligible to attend this summer, regardless of the number of AP Summer Institutes they may have attended since entering the APTAP.
Following registration of MMSI APTAP teachers, registration will be open to teachers from schools outside the Program.
TWO LOCATIONS
All Biology courses and the Chemistry (New) course will be located at Gann Academy in Waltham, MA.
All other courses will be located at Bentley University in Waltham, MA.
WHAT TO BRING
ALL participants are advised to bring a laptop.
MATH participants are required to bring a graphing calculator.
SCIENCE participants are required to bring a graphing calculator, lab coat, goggles and closed-toe shoes.
Participants will receive a detailed e-packet (electronic packet) approximately two weeks prior to the Institute that will list any additional materials/equipment to bring, per the course and/or course instructor.
HOW TO REGISTER
Where applicable, participants have the option of registering for an (EXPERIENCED) or a (NEW) section of the course available. Mass Math + Science Initiative
The Mass Math + Science Initiative (MMSI), an Advanced Placement* (AP) driven, performance based public-private partnership operating at scale, is the state’s largest high school math and science program aimed at underserved students. MMSI is expanding access to rigorous AP coursework and closing achievements gaps in more than 60 high schools statewide. This comprehensive Program combines rigor with multiple supports including teacher training, content coaching and additional learning time for students to produce results.
Now in its 5th year, MMSI has consistently delivered a disproportionate percentage of the state's AP gains, nearly doubling college credit eligible AP scores in math, science and English.
From 2008-2013, the program has resulted in: more than 5,000 new enrollments in AP classes, and nearly a 150% increase in the number of students earning qualifying scores on math, science and English AP exams.
By 2014, MMSI will engage more than 8,500 high school students annually, greatly increasing their likelihood of college enrollment and completion.
Massachusetts is one of six states selected to participate in an innovative program led by the National Math and Science Initiative to address the drastic decline in math and science education in the United States. A five-year, $30 million initiative, MMSI was organized by Mass Insight Education in partnership with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and private funders.
